Issue #1: Spring '07 pdf

'Bitter Melon''s Mission Statement

(currently in revision):

The newsletter is a compilation of stories, articles, and poems surrounding the lives of college students of Asian Pacific descent from UC Irvine.

- We are different voices from different Asian backgrounds who explore the tastes, sights, and sounds that arise from our typical and atypical college lives. Through creative self-expression, biting humor, and equally fresh perspectives, we simply aim to voice the silent struggles in understanding ourselves, where we come from, and where to go from here.

Our Orientation: The publication is not all bitter, as the title would claim. Expect entertainment, hilarity, seriousness, and yes, even a hint of college humor; experience, respect, and identification.

Craving for others to read your story?

'Bitter Melon' is looking for individuals from UC Irvine who aren't necessarily writers, but people looking to share their experiences that can relate and give insight on issues and interests as college students and Asian-Americans residing in the O.C.

Express yourself and be creative with your words. Tell others what you really want to say, but have never had the chance or the opportunity to write, for yourself, your colleagues, your friends and family. Poetry, hard-nosed banter, snot-faced hooplah, bitter rants, narratives. Almost anything and everything you want (that's edited and not too offensive). Turn it in and see your work published. Here.

Works can remain anonymous, if desired.

Note: The theme for issue 2 - FAMILY.

02.15.07

'Bitter Melon' is accepting all creative works. There has been a steady flow of subscriptions, so please keep sending them in! The magazine is slowly, but surely, compiling itself together. Publication is now foreseeable, but substantial progress is unlikely for this quarter.

Hopefully more solid information will be provided, such as topics and themes that relate to the Asian American experience within the UC Irvine community.

The first issue is expected to be released in a couple of months (give or take, depending), so stay tuned for further content and the *savory* details.
